Conservation Projects

Invasive Fish Control - Numerous invasive species have appeared in the waters that TSHC members fish. These include the Koi, Gobi, Silver Carp, and other minor species.
In most cases we have been advised to destroy the fish if they are found where they do not belong. Their presence has a negative effect on the environment - either killing native species in greater than natural replacement numbers or consuming natural aquatic wildlife that helps to fight naturally occurring pollution (like fish excrement and rot).

Waterfront Preservation - Groups like the Fort Erie Waterfront Preservation Association (http://www.fewpa.org/) help to preserve our natural spaces from development. In many cases it also involves the sale of public lands that we all enjoy.

Hunting/Fishing Quotas - These controls are law - not guidelines and TSHC adheres to the laws of the province of Ontario. This means filling out the necessary applications for thing like Doe Tags, Fishing Licences, and submitting to mandatory inspections.

Fire Safety - In the wild or at home fire safety is very important. Measures have been taken to contain and control all fires at the Northern Camp. Some members have personally felt the effects of a fire related disaster.
Insurance cannot bring someone back to life, so prevention and frequent inspection of fire suppression and warning equipment is followed. This includes handheld Fire Extinguishers, Smoke Detectors, Exhaust/Chimney Inspections, etc.
Also for the members with firearms recommendations have been made to keep weapons lockers at the Northern camp as far away from heat sources and fire as necessary.

(This listing was started in 2010, though the club has a conservation history noted in the meeting minutes available to members only)
